La canzone Smile, di Charlie Chaplin, ha sempre avuto un significato speciale per me. Nei momenti di dolore, ridicolo, ansia e paura, ho imparato che queste sensazioni erano passaggi e ponti nel viaggio della vita e non destinazioni.
“Sorridere”, anche in quei tempi bui in cui tutto sembrava perduto, dava un senso di speranza che si trasformò in coraggio, azione e soluzioni.
Chaplin ha scritto la musica negli anni ’30 per il suo film, Modern Times. Le sofferenze della Grande Depressione infuriavano ancora così come l’ingiustizia, la paura e la violenza in tutto il mondo. I testi furono aggiunti negli anni ’50 e accettati da Chaplin come espressione della poesia e dell’essenza della sua musica. Nat King Cole e altri lo hanno cantato con sentimenti intensi che indugiano nell’anima, nel cuore e nella mente.

The song Smile, by Charlie Chaplin always had a special significance for me. In moments of pain, ridicule, anxiety, and fear, I learned that these sensations were passages and bridges in the journey of life and not destinations.
“Smiling,” even in those dark times when all seemed lost, gave a sense of hope which grew into courage, action, and solutions.
Chaplin wrote the music in the 1930s for his film, Modern Times. The suffering of the Great Depression was still raging as was injustice, fear, and violence throughout the world. The lyrics were added in the 1950s and accepted by Chaplin as expressing the poetry and essence of his music. Nat King Cole and others sang it with intense feelings that linger in the soul, the heart, and the mind.

Smile è una composizione scritta da Charlie Chaplin nel 1936, divenuta negli anni un classico fra i più noti ed eseguiti della musica internazionale. Il brano, inizialmente solo strumentale, venne composto da Charlie Chaplin come leitmotiv del film Tempi moderni, recitato e diretto dallo stesso Chaplin nel 1936. Nel 1954 John Turner e Geoffrey Parsons scrissero il testo, dando nel contempo il titolo alla canzone [1]. Le parole sono un invito al sorriso, visto come viatico per un futuro radioso.
Smile divenne un successo già dalla sua “apparizione” come tema musicale del film.

La prima versione cantata fu quella di Nat King Cole nel 1954, con moltissime cover realizzate negli anni successivi da artisti in tutto il mondo. La figlia Natalie Cole la riproporrà nel suo fortunato album del 1991 Unforgettable… with Love (Da Wikipedia).
