A Winter’s Tale

Yesterday the fields were only grey with scattered snow,
And now the longest grass-leaves hardly emerge;
Yet her deep footsteps mark the snow, and go
On towards the pines at the hill’s white verge.
I cannot see her, since the mist’s white scarf
Obscures the dark wood and the dull orange sky;
But she’s waiting, I know, impatient and cold, half
Sobs struggling into her frosty sigh.
Why does she come so promptly, when she must know
That she’s only the nearer to the inevitable farewell;
The hill is steep, on the snow my steps are slow –
Why does she come, when she knows what I have to tell?
Un racconto d’inverno
Sol grigi erano i campi appena ieri
E un po’ di neve sparsa qua e là,
Ed or dell’erba i lunghi fili radi
A stento e con fatica vedi spuntar;
Eppur di lei i passi assai a fondo
Segnan la neve e vanno verso i pini
Ritti sul colle e immersi nel candor.
Non posso io vederla nella nebbia
Siccome avvolta da un bianco velo
La tetra selva oscura e il cielo opaco;
Però lei sta aspettando ed io lo so,
con impazienza e tutta infreddolita,
struggendosi in sospiri e singhiozzando.
Perché tanto s’affretta quando sa
Che il mesto addio fatale a lei s’appresta;
Ripido è il colle e i passi miei son lenti
Nell’abbondante neve. Perché lei viene?
Ciò che le devo dir, lei ben lo sa.
David Herbert Lawrence, novelist, short-story writer, poet, and essayist, was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, on September 11, 1885. Though better known as a novelist, Lawrence’s first-published works (in 1909) were poems, and his poetry, especially his evocations of the natural world, have since had a significant influence on many poets on both sides of the Atlantic.
David Herbert Lawrence, scrittore di racconti brevi, romanzi, poesie e saggi è nato a Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, Inghilterra, l’11 settembre 1885.
