Lettera aperta alla gente di Ponza. Evviva il Giorno della Liberazione

L’11 giugno 2017 dovrebbe essere ricordato nella storia di Ponza come “Il Giorno della Liberazione”.

Settantuno anni fa il popolo italiano ha tenuto la sua prima elezione dopo la caduta del fascismo. Uno spirito di coraggio, ribellione e determinazione ha spronato milioni di italiani, esausti e dolenti per la Guerra, a scegliere la libertà, la speranza, l’indipendenza e l’identità.

Lo stesso spirito, lo stesso coraggio e lo stesso senso di speranza, indipendenza e identità hanno condotto i votanti di Ponza a superare un’era di discordia, vendetta e divisione. Tutti i cittadini della nostra isola dovrebbero esserne orgogliosi, anche se hanno sostenuto e votato per la parte avversa. Essi dovrebbero essere colpiti dal fatto che l’amore per la loro terra natale esiste nei cuori di così tante persone che hanno combattuto per le idee e gli ideali con passione e forza.

Ora è il momento di sanare le ferite. È tempo di pensare a tutte quelle qualità che ci hanno portato a stare insieme e a perdonare e dimenticare.
Una vera guerra civile è passata su Ponza.
Circa 150 anni fa un uomo si è alzato sopra il suo popolo per giurare fedeltà alla Costituzione della sua Nazione. Egli ha affrontato i suoi concittadini che erano lacerati da lealtà, interessi e visioni diversi. Essi avevano sofferto. Egli vide il desiderio di vendetta nei petti dei vincitori. Invece, disse loro:

Con astio nei confronti di nessuno, con misericordia per tutti, con la fermezza nel diritto che Dio ci dà di vedere la cosa giusta, adoperiamoci a finire il lavoro che abbiamo cominciato, a sanare le ferite della nazione, ad aver cura per colui che si è immolato in battaglia, per la sua vedova e i suoi orfani, per fare tutto quel che è in nosto potere ottenere e onorarlo con una pace giusta e di lunga durata tra noi e con tutte le nazioni.

Il suo nome era Abramo Lincoln. Nello stesso spirito di riconciliazione lavoriamo insieme a costruire il futuro e uniamo i nostri talenti per dare lavoro ai giovani, opportunità agli imprenditori e a coloro che creano lavoro; a dare benessere ai nostri cittadini e a portar avanti un nuovo senso di compassione, integrità e rispetto come popolo orgoglioso di una eredità di duro lavoro, onestà e coraggio.

Preghiamo Dio e San Silverio di aiutare la nuova amministrazione ad aver successo nell’esaudire i sogni e le ispirazioni di progresso e pace per la nostra “perla del Mediterraneo”.

 


An Open Letter to the People of Ponza. Long Live “Liberation Day”

June 11th, 2017 should go down in the history of Ponza as “Liberation Day”.

Seventy one years ago, the people of Italy held their first election after the fall of Fascism. A spirit of courage, defiance and determination spurred millions of Italians, exhausted and saddened from the War, to choose freedom, hope, independence and identity.

That same spirit, that same courage and that same sense of hope, independence and identity carried the voters of Ponza to eliminate an era of discord, vengeance and division. It took the combined forces of many political persuasions to unite and defeat a regime. Every citizen of our “Pearl of the Mediterranean,” should be proud, even if they supported and voted for the other side. They should be impressed that the love of their homeland exists in the hearts of so many that they would fight for ideas and ideals with passion and vigor.

Now is the moment for healing. It is time to think of all those qualities that bring us together and to forgive and forget. The civil war is over in Ponza. Over 150 years ago, a man stood up before his people to swear allegiance to the Constitution of his nation. He faced citizens who were torn by divided loyalties, interests and visions. They had suffered. He saw vengeance in the bosoms of the victors. Instead, he said to them:

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

His name was Abraham Lincoln. In the same spirit of reconciliation, let us come together and think of the future and combine our talents to bring jobs to the young, bring opportunity to entrepreneurs and those who create work, bring health to our citizens and bring a new sense of compassion, integrity and respect as people of a proud heritage of hard work, honesty and courage.

Let us pray to God and San Silverio to help our new Administration succeed in fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of progress and peace for our “Pearl of the Mediterranean.”
